\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\tAdriano Goldschmied, the Italian designer widely regarded as the \u201cgodfather of denim,\u201d died Sunday in Italy at the age of 82 following a battle with cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tBehind iconic brands such as Diesel, Reply, Gap 1969, AG and Goldsign, Goldschmied leaves behind a legacy that transformed jeans from utilitarian workwear into a cornerstone of high fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tOver a career spanning more than five decades, Goldschmied <\/a>pioneered premium denim, mentored future industry leaders and championed sustainability long before it became a global imperative. Goldschmied\u2019s journey into fashion began in the early 1970s, when a friend encouraged him to sell imported jeans to crowds gathered outside a popular nightclub. Operating his first store, King\u2019s Shop, in the alpine resort town of Cortina d\u2019Ampezzo, he catered to an international, affluent clientele seeking rare and distinctive fashion. His instinct for innovation quickly set him apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tIn 1974, he launched Daily Blue<\/a>, a denim label that introduced new fits, colors and \u2014 most notably \u2014 a higher price point that helped elevate jeans into the realm of designer fashion. \u201cDaily Blue was important not only for the sales and success, but also because it had a very strong influence in the fashion business,\u201d Goldschmied said in a 2023 interview<\/a> with SJ Denim. \u201cBasically, at that time, denim fashion started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tDespite having no formal design training, Goldschmied embraced experimentation from the outset. \u201cObviously, I didn\u2019t have any preparation,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know anything about design, nothing about the construction and the design of the garment\u2026.That first production was going to a fabric store in my hometown, buying crazy fabrics for a very high price and going through manufacturing with my tailor.\u2026The product was extremely expensive, and in some way, I created a premium denim by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tGoldschmied\u2019s creative and entrepreneurial instincts led him to found the Genious Group in 1981, a collective that fostered emerging designers and helped launch influential brands such as Diesel<\/a> and Replay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\u201cIn the early \u201980s we were focused on just creating amazing new products by leading the fashion trends using our Italian passion and ability for craftsmanship. There were no limits to achieve our aesthetic goals. We were thinking to create unique jeans and at that time, we were not even thinking about the fact that our design work had a big influence on massive jean production in the world,\u201d Goldschmied said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tGenious Group also spurred key innovations in denim production, including new washing and finishing techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These experiences reshaped his perspective, particularly regarding the social and environmental impact of fashion. \u201cI remember coming back from my first trip in China and realizing that we have to repair our mistakes,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why at that time I started working in sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tIn 1993, he cofounded Agolde, and in 2000 launched AG Adriano Goldschmied with Yul Ku in Los Angeles, emphasizing responsible production during premium denim\u2019s heyday. Decades later, he continued to innovate, collaborating with brands such as Chlo\u00e9 on circular denim and reintroducing Daily Blue with environmentally conscious practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tAlong the way, Goldschmied became one of the industry\u2019s biggest collaborators<\/a>, lending his expertise to companies across the denim supply chain. In 2023, Italian retail OVS<\/a> partnered with Goldschmied to deliver high-quality denim geared toward a younger consumer demographic. As an early adopter of Lenzing\u2019s Tencel fiber, he played a key role in advancing its use in denim, championing its potential through research-driven collections. He also developed conceptual collections with Advance Denim, Isko, ArtMill, Soko and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tOn April 14, Pioneer Denim is preparing to hold a runway show in Amsterdam featuring garments designed by Goldschmied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t until the late \u201980s to early \u201990s, after the global success of denim finishings, when we started to realize that we were going in a very wrong direction. We understood that as designers we were driving the industry to a dead end and that we had the responsibility to make a real change,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tGoldschmied often spoke candidly about the resistance he faced as an early advocate of sustainability. \u201cI remember that at the very beginning, it was like a voice in the desert because nobody was believing and everybody was telling me \u2018This is a waste of time and money,\u2019 \u2018The public is not going to care about that,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tAs sustainability gained traction across the industry, he remained both encouraged and cautious, warning against superficial efforts and greenwashing. \u201cClimate change is not waiting for us,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery season is worse than the other and it is clear that today, working on lowering the impact is extremely urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tHe also called for a more humane approach to business. \u201cWe can introduce a new way or a new form of capitalism [that] is not only about making money, making money, making money,\u201d he said. \u201cOur goal is to make the people happy. That\u2019s what I think. For example, when I design something, I like to imagine my consumer smiling in front of a mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\tGoldschmied could be counted on to deliver frank and honest takes on the industry. While speaking at the Sourcing Journal x Rivet Sustainability conference <\/a>in L.A. in 2024, he called out the city\u2019s lack of investment in sustainability. \u201cThey don\u2019t have a vision of the future or take an opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he wasn’t being stopped to take a photo with a colleague\/fan, he could be found walking the floor with the curiosity of a newcomer, eager to absorb the latest collections and innovations. These events also served as a platform for him to champion companies and technologies that inspired him, including advancements like digital printing, automation and alternative fibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known for his generosity and openness, he devoted time to students, young designers, journalists and anyone curious about denim or committed to improving the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\u201cHonestly, I answer to everybody,\u201d he said, reflecting his openness to guiding the next generation. Of all his accomplishments, he often cited this commitment as among his most meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\u201cHe was like 20 years old,\u201d Goldschmied said of Diesel founder Renzo Rosso<\/a>, one of the many designers he helped launch. \u201cThe idea of taking a guy like him and to put him in a position to grow and to arrive where he arrived, obviously, is a big satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\u201cI think that the relationships that I have today are extremely valuable,\u201d he added. \u201cI see, for instance, when I pick up the phone, I call somebody, nobody\u2019s hanging up. If they can help me, they help me. Also, because they know how much energy I\u2019ve been spending to help people. For instance, if somebody, a student, is calling me to [say] \u2018Oh, I’d like to do something,\u2019 I can spend hours talking.
